Burin Engraving
The lines shown above were originally cut with a burin into a copper plate, then printed on paper. This image is a small detail from my print, Thought, which I engraved and printed in 1970.
In the column at right, the upper photograph shows three burins for engraving copper plates. After a plate is engraved, it has to be printed on an etching press. Printing a copper plate is a time-consuming hand process.
The second photograph shows my etching press in Fall 1964. Inky handprints on the five arms of the press show that I was using it for intaglio printing.
The third photograph shows a brass name plate on the etching press, built in 1964 by Fredy Re'em of Bottega d'Arte Grafica in Florence, Italy. The press was designed by Andrew Rush, a well-known artist-printmaker in Tucson, Arizona.
The last photograph (right) shows the decorative brass rosette centered on the drive-wheel of my etching press. The rosette was designed in 1963 by Jean Rush in Tucson.
Below is a detail view of my engraving, Lucas van Leyden Engraves a Feather. It shows a wide variety of engraved lines. Dark areas were created by cutting parallel lines. Darkest forms were created by cross-hatching, overlapping lines in different directions.
Every engraving is unique in some way. Working processes often vary from one plate to the next. Different artists usually favor different methods of working.
